Children's Eye Exams in Peoria

Eye Health Is Essential

No matter your age, eye health is an essential part of whole-body health. Kids are no exception. Their eyes go through plenty of growth and change in the first 6 years of life. Unfortunately, most kids don’t get the vision care they need.

Simple vision screenings, like the ones kids get at school, are not nearly enough to ensure the health of their eyes. These screenings generally assess your ability to read words on a page, but they can’t look at the internal structure of the eye and determine if there’s an underlying condition.

At The Bixby Eye Center, we take pride in caring for your entire family, from those who formed the roots to the newest members. Book an eye exam for your child today.

Before School Or Sooner

Back-to-school season is busy. There are new pencils to buy, fresh notebooks to get, and hopefully, a comprehensive eye exam to book.

The American Optometric Association recommends kids have an annual eye exam starting before first grade all the way until they become adults. Before the classroom is even in sight, kids should already have an ocular baseline established with their optometrist.

Their first exam should take place between the ages of 6 months and 12 months, followed by another exam between the ages of 3 and 5.

Don’t let the school year start without ensuring your children are prepared—book them an eye exam today.

Why Does My Child Need An Eye Exam?

What does the path to success look like when they can’t see where it begins? If your child struggles to see, everything else can become more difficult. Athletics, academics, and even social skills present a challenge when vision isn’t clear.

The eyes are the dominant input device for the brain. Vision problems can be misdiagnosed as a learning disability or a behavioral disorder.

Passing a simple screening test might provide a false sense of security about eye health, but vision is nothing to be complacent about. Comprehensive eye exams are for so much more.

Visual acuity is tested at a simple screening and describes your clarity and sharpness of vision.  It is often what we think of when considering an eye exam. It’s important, but it is certainly not the only aspect of vision we need to think about.

A comprehensive eye exam is needed so an optometrist can check for conditions like amblyopia, strabismus, and ensure that visual skills like hand-eye coordination are developing.

Optometrists Can Help

If your child has a refractive error like myopia (nearsightedness), your optometrist can provide you with options for controlling it before it gets worse. When problems with hand-eye coordination or focusing occur, we can even recommend vision therapy. You won’t get this type of personalized advice with a simple screening.

Myth vs. Fact Myth: If I can see fine, I don’t need an eye exam.Fact: Many eye conditions develop quietly — without noticeable vision changes at first. A comprehensive eye exam looks at the overall health of your eyes, not just how clearly you can read the chart. At The Bixby Eye Center, we believe prevention and early detection are key to protecting your vision for the long term. Even if everything seems “fine,” routine exams help catch concerns early and keep your eyes healthy. If it’s been a while since your last visit, this is your sign ✔️📞 Call us at (309) 692-0000 or visit www.bixbyeyecenter.com to schedule your comprehensive exam.Your future vision will thank you ...
